Tashkent
Tashkent (en transcripción del ruso Ташке́нт), o Toshkent en uzbeko, es la capital de Uzbekistán. Población: 2.142.700 de habitantes (1999). El nombre actual procede de la lengua turcomana, y significa "ciudad de piedra". En el pasado, la ciudad ha tenido también los nombres de Chach, Shash y Binkent. Fue durante muchos siglos un punto de paso importante en la ruta de la seda, ruta comercial que unía Asia con Europa. A pesar de no tener el valor histórico de otras ciudades uzbecas, como Bujara, Samarkanda o Jiva, Tashkent es el principal centro económico y cultural de Uzbekistán. En ella se encuentran las principales instituciones académicas del país, así como las sedes de las empresas transnacionales con actividad en Uzbekistán. En la ciudad se publican nueve periódicos en uzbeko, otros nueve en ruso, así como cuatro publicaciones en inglés.

Fundada alrededor del s. I BC, fue un centro de comercio importante en las rutas de caravanas hacia Europa y Asia oriental. Los árabes la conquistaron a comienzos del s. VIII; cayó en poder de los mongoles en el s. XIII y estuvo bajo control turco durante los s. XIV–XV. Capturada por los rusos en 1865, pasó a ser el centro administrativo de Turkistán en 1867, y una nueva ciudad europea creció al lado de la antigua ciudad nativa. En 1966, sufrió graves daños a causa de un terremoto. Hoy es el principal centro económico y cultural de Asia central. Entre sus numerosas instituciones de educación superior destaca la Academia de Ciencias Uzbeka (1943).
